    About This Experience

Skansen, the Open-Air Museum of Sweden’s Living History and Wildlife

Trade the busy, modern streets of Stockholm for the cobblestones, farmyards, and wild forests of Sweden’s past. As the world’s oldest open-air museum, Skansen lets you do more than just learn about history: it lets you walk right through it.

Founded in 1891 by Swedish scholar Artur Hazelius, the park-museum was born out of a desire to preserve a vanishing world. As the Industrial Revolution swept across Europe and Swedes left their rural villages for the growing cities, Hazelius saw traditional customs, architecture, and folk crafts fading away. He established Skansen on the leafy island of Djurgården to capture the everyday reality of Swedish rural culture, creating a living landscape where future generations could experience their heritage firsthand.

Here is a glimpse of what you will experience along the way

A walk through time awaits you, as the park features roughly 190 historical buildings that were carefully dismantled, transported from all over the country, and meticulously rebuilt on site. As you explore the grounds, the environment shifts from the lush agricultural estates of the south to a traditional Sámi camp from the far north.

Along the way, you can wander through old rural farmsteads, take a seat at the wooden desks of a charming 19th-century schoolhouse, and step inside a beautiful historic wooden church. The architecture here spans more than seven centuries: the oldest timber storehouse on site dates to the early 1300s, while other houses showcase life through the 1950s.

You will be immersed in the atmosphere of the old town, an environment that genuinely feels like a living, breathing community. In the old town quarter, cobblestone streets are lined with working historic shops. You can step into an antique pharmacy, listen to the rhythmic strike of the blacksmith’s hammer in the smithy, and watch skilled artisans shape molten glass at the glassworks.

The air here is often filled with the irresistible, sweet scent of cardamom and cinnamon, drawing you toward the 1870s bakery. Throughout the old town quarter and the rural farmsteads, you will meet historical interpreters dressed in period clothing. These experts bring the past to life, demonstrating traditional crafts and sharing stories about how Swedes survived the harsh winters and celebrated the changing seasons.

You will also discover the wildlife of Scandinavia, as Skansen is unique in serving as a zoological park dedicated to native Nordic animals. Following the forested paths, you can encounter the animals that have shared the landscape with Swedes for centuries:

Large mammals: keep an eye out for majestic moose, elusive lynx, wolverines, and grazing reindeer.

The brown bears: a major highlight is the enclosure dedicated to these impressive creatures, where you can often watch them foraging, climbing, and interacting in their naturalistic habitat.

The aquatic animals: the park also features pools dedicated to aquatic life, where harbor seals and otters swim and playfully splash around together.

Whether you are enjoying a warm pastry in the old town square, discovering how a 19th-century farm operated, or watching a brown bear roam the hillside, Skansen offers a grounded, engaging, and unforgettable journey into Sweden’s past.

Christmas Market and “Midsommar” (Midsummer Celebration)

Skansen is one of Stockholm’s best-known places for Sweden’s most important seasonal celebrations. In winter, the park hosts its historic Christmas market: a local tradition since 1903, where you can browse stalls for handmade crafts and warm up with a steaming cup of glögg (mulled wine). In late June, the focus shifts to a classic Midsummer celebration, complete with traditional folk dancing, flower wreaths, and the raising of the maypole.
