    About This Experience

Discover a museum unlike any other, built solely to house the Vasa: the only surviving 17th-century warship that remains almost entirely intact.

On August 10, 1628, the Vasa set sail on its maiden voyage. Commissioned by King Gustav II Adolf to project Swedish power in the Baltic, the ship was designed to showcase the prestige of the crown. But after only a few minutes, two gusts of wind in quick succession caused it to heel over, and it sank just 120 meters from shore. The disaster remains one of the most dramatic in Swedish history.

Our guided tour of the Vasa Museum shows how a catastrophe turned into a treasure. In 1961, after more than three hundred years on the floor of the Baltic Sea, the Vasa was brought to the surface in remarkably good shape. Today, thanks to painstaking restoration work, we can admire it in all its splendor. Paradoxically, the Vasa survived almost entirely intact precisely because of its sinking, which spared it from military campaigns or the risk of being dismantled.

Since opening in 1990, the museum, designed by architects Marianne Dahlbäck and Göran Månsson, has served two purposes: to tell the story of the Vasa and to help preserve it. Chemists, biologists, and archaeologists continue to monitor the condition of the wood and search for ways to counter the effects of acidity and bacterial activity.

    During Our Tour

You will see the ship from every angle as we move through the museum's different levels (elevators are available on every floor) to admire its intricate details and the more than 700 sculptures that adorn it.

We will place the Vasa within its historical context: 17th-century Sweden and Gustav II Adolf's ambitious vision for the nation.

You will explore thematic exhibitions with original artifacts and modern installations that recreate life aboard a warship of the period.

You will follow the incredible story of the ship's recovery: a technological challenge that took years to solve and culminated in one of the most remarkable salvage operations in maritime history.
