Imagine exploring the halls of one of Europe's largest and most dynamic palaces, where centuries of history echo through grand, art-filled state rooms. The Royal Palace in Stockholm stands as a monumental masterpiece of Baroque architecture. It is a vast structure spanning roughly 42,000 square meters (over 450,000 square feet) and boasting more than 1,400 rooms.
The building sits at the highest point of Gamla Stan (the Old Town), exactly where the medieval Tre Kronor castle (Three Crowns Castle) once stood. Back in the late 13th century, Tre Kronor was a simple fortress featuring the three crowns emblem on its main tower. Those three crowns remain one of Sweden's most iconic symbols today, displayed on government buildings all over the country.
Over the centuries, Tre Kronor grew into a full-fledged medieval castle until a devastating fire nearly burned it to the ground in 1697. In the decades that followed, thanks to a massive rebuilding effort led by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, the royal palace began to take the shape we recognize today. Drawing inspiration from Roman palace architecture, Tessin created a grand, symmetrical building that reflects Sweden's era as a major European power. While it serves as the official workplace and primary venue for the Swedish royal family's state receptions, the royal family no longer resides here. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia moved their private residence to Drottningholm Palace in 1981.
A tour of the Royal Palace focuses primarily on the State Apartments. These spaces beautifully trace the evolution of European and Swedish interior design from the late 17th through the 19th centuries. A crucial aspect of the palace's artistic heritage is the profound French influence on its creation. After Tessin's death, architect Carl Hårleman took over the project and invited leading French painters, sculptors, and craftsmen to Stockholm. This collaboration introduced the lighter, highly decorative motifs of French Rococo into the palace, softening the heavier Baroque foundations before transitioning into the structured elegance of the Swedish Gustavian (Neoclassical) period. The interiors feature intricate stucco ceilings, monumental plafond paintings, original Gobelin tapestries, and remarkably preserved period furniture. Today, these historic spaces host official state visits and royal ceremonies.
The palace grounds also serve as the venue for enduring military traditions. The Changing of the Guard, carried out in the outer courtyard, is a formal military ceremony that has been practiced continuously since the 16th century. This event provides a visible link to the monarchy and remains a significant part of the Royal Palace's daily life.
